Face detection is an AI camera function that locates human faces in a video feed and captures a still image at the moment of detection. At a building entrance, every person who walks through is photographed automatically – without anyone watching a screen.
Face detection is different from face recognition. Detection confirms a face is present and captures it. Recognition tries to identify who the person is by comparing against a database. Most surveillance deployments use detection only – capturing images for post-incident review rather than real-time identification.
- Outputs a timestamped still image each time a face is detected
- Works regardless of lighting conditions when paired with good IR illumination
- Multiple faces in the same frame are each captured separately
- Snapshot quality depends on camera resolution and subject distance from the lens
