Geofencing is drawing a virtual boundary around a location on a map and getting notified when a tracked vehicle or asset crosses it. A transport company draws a fence around their depot – if a vehicle leaves between midnight and 5am, an alert goes out immediately.
Geofences come in three shapes. Circular fences are the fastest to set up; polygon fences follow the exact outline of a site; corridor fences define a permitted route and flag deviations.
- Entry alert – notifies when an asset arrives at a designated location
- Exit alert – notifies when an asset leaves a permitted zone
- After-hours movement – flags any movement outside defined working hours
- Parking alarm – alerts when an asset is stationary inside a zone it should have left
- Internal storage – devices can hold multiple geofences on board, sending alerts even when connectivity is lost
