NFC is a very short-range wireless technology that works when two devices are held within a few centimetres of each other. For IoT sensors, it is a configuration interface: hold a smartphone running the manufacturer’s app close to an installed sensor to read its current readings, adjust settings, or check battery status – without opening the enclosure.
For IP67-rated sensors mounted in difficult positions – inside a control panel, behind equipment, on a ceiling – NFC removes the need to dismount the device to access a configuration port.
- Maximum range: approximately 4 cm – accidental activation is not a concern
- Configuration via smartphone app – no laptop, cables, or special tools required
- Works through plastic enclosures without breaking the IP seal
- Typical uses: update reporting interval, change thresholds, activate or deactivate device, check battery status
