Sub-metering places energy meters on individual circuits, HVAC units, tenant boards, or production machines. The main utility meter shows what the building uses in total. Sub-meters show which part of the building is using it. Without sub-metering, finding energy waste below the building level is guesswork.
The most practical IoT approach is wireless – fitting LoRaWAN current transformers or pulse counters to existing circuits without cutting power or rewiring.
- Zone-level visibility – see consumption by floor, department, or tenant separately
- Equipment profiling – identify machines running outside working hours or consuming more than expected
- Tenant billing – allocate energy costs accurately in multi-occupancy buildings
- ISO 50001 – sub-metering is a prerequisite for energy management system certification
- Wireless installation – current transformer clamps onto the existing cable with no circuit interruption required
