Telematics is the technology that lets you monitor vehicles remotely. A GPS tracker fitted to a van sends its location, speed, and engine status to a web dashboard over a mobile signal – giving you a live map of your whole fleet from any phone or computer.
A full telematics system pulls data from several sources simultaneously:
- GNSS receiver – records position and route history
- Accelerometer – detects harsh braking, cornering, and collisions
- CAN Bus or OBD-II – reads engine data like fuel use, RPM, and fault codes
- Cellular modem – transmits everything to a cloud platform in near real time
- Digital inputs – monitors ignition status, door switches, and additional sensors
Fleet managers use telematics data to cut fuel costs, reduce accidents, locate stolen vehicles quickly, and prove compliance with driving hour regulations.
