The Progressive Safe System is a set of required safety technologies for HGVs that do not meet the minimum Direct Vision Standard star rating for London operation. It replaces what the driver cannot see directly through the cab windows with camera feeds and proximity sensors.
The PSS requirement has been in force in London since October 2024 for all HGVs over 12 tonnes. The minimum set of equipment required for a PSS to be approved by TfL includes:
- Moving off information system (MOIS) – detects and alerts to vulnerable road users directly in the path of the vehicle
- Camera monitoring system – replaces or supplements mirrors for blind spots on the nearside and front
- Left-turn / manoeuvring warning – audible external alert to cyclists and pedestrians during left turns
- TfL type approval – only PSS components on TfL’s approved product list qualify for permit compliance
