The Direct Vision Standard is a rule from Transport for London that applies to lorries over 12 tonnes entering or operating in Greater London. Each vehicle is given a star rating (0-5) based on how much the driver can see directly through the cab windows without mirrors or cameras. Low-rated lorries need extra safety equipment to operate.
Since October 2024, vehicles entering Greater London must either meet the minimum 3-star DVS rating or fit an approved Progressive Safe System (PSS). The PSS includes camera and sensor technology to compensate for limited direct vision:
- Moving off information system (MOIS) – alerts driver to pedestrians and cyclists during low-speed manoeuvres
- Audible warnings – alerts vulnerable road users when the vehicle turns
- Camera monitoring system – replaces blind-spot mirrors with camera feeds
- Fleet managers based outside London still need permits for any vehicle that enters the GLA boundary
