Overview
The EG71 is a building IoT gateway from Milesight. It connects field-level sensors and devices to cloud platforms or building management systems, handling the data flow between the two layers without extra hardware or complex setup.
The EG71 supports three backhaul options: Ethernet, 4G LTE cellular, and Wi-Fi. If one connection drops, the gateway switches to the next available path automatically. This keeps data flowing even in buildings with unreliable fixed-line connections.
For field devices, the EG71 connects via RS485, KNX, M-BUS (under development), LoRaWAN, and Ethernet. This covers the most common wiring standards found in commercial buildings, so existing installations can connect without rewiring.
The EG71 reads data from field devices using Modbus RTU, BACnet MS/TP, and KNX – the protocols most HVAC controllers, metres, and sensors speak natively. It then forwards that data to BMS platforms or cloud systems using MQTT, HTTP, BACnet/IP, or Modbus TCP. No translation layer needed between the two sides.
The built-in LoRaWAN gateway supports up to 2,000 wireless end devices based on a 10-minute uplink interval. This makes it practical for large campuses or multi-floor buildings where running cables to every sensor is not cost-effective. NFC speeds up the process of adding Milesight LoRaWAN devices on site.
The EG71 has 8 universal inputs that each accept digital, analog (0-10V or 4-20mA), RTD, NTC, or resistance signals depending on what the connected sensor outputs. There are also 4 dry contact digital inputs for simple on/off signals, 3 relay outputs for switching loads, and 4 analog outputs for sending control signals back to HVAC or building equipment.
The EG71 supports OpenVPN, IPsec, PPTP, L2TP, and WireGuard tunnels for encrypted remote access. Firewall options include access control, port mapping, MAC binding, and domain filtering – enough to meet standard IT security requirements in commercial buildings without additional appliances.
Teams that need custom logic can run Python SDK scripts or Node-RED flows directly on the EG71. This allows local automation rules, custom data transforms, or integration with third-party platforms without sending everything to the cloud first. Remote management runs through the Milesight Development Platform.
The EG71 accepts 24V DC/AC via terminal block, 802.3af PoE on the ETH1 port, or 5V via USB Type-C. The PoE option is useful in network cabinet installations where a separate power run is not available. Typical draw is 8.2W, with a maximum of 11.24W under load.

Applications
The EG71 is built for BMS deployments in commercial buildings, campuses, and hotels. It connects HVAC controllers, lighting systems, and access control devices through RS485, KNX, and Ethernet in a single gateway. Facilities teams get a central point for data collection and control without deploying multiple separate systems.
Energy metres and sub-metres using Modbus or M-BUS connect directly to the EG71. The gateway reads consumption data from multiple circuits and forwards it to energy management platforms via MQTT or HTTP. The analog inputs also accept 4-20mA signals from flow metres or current transformers, making it useful for granular metering across a building.
HVAC systems using BACnet or Modbus communicate with the EG71 over wired interfaces. The 4 analog outputs send 0-10V or 4-20mA control signals back to variable air volume controllers, fan coil units, or actuators. Combined with the universal inputs reading temperature sensors directly, the EG71 can handle both monitoring and closed-loop control for HVAC zones.
In manufacturing and industrial sites, the EG71 connects RS485 devices such as PLCs, drives, and metres using Modbus RTU. The wide operating temperature range of -40 °C to +60 °C makes it suitable for plant environments that are not climate-controlled. DIN rail mounting fits standard industrial enclosures without modification.
The integrated LoRaWAN gateway handles up to 2,000 wireless sensors or end devices in a single deployment. This is practical for large sites where sensor cabling is not feasible – multi-story buildings, warehouses, or outdoor areas on a campus. NFC speeds up on-site provisioning of Milesight LoRaWAN devices considerably.
Where fixed-line Ethernet is not reliable or available, the EG71 falls back to 4G LTE cellular. VPN tunnels keep the connection secure even over public mobile networks. This makes the EG71 a reasonable choice for remote plant rooms, temporary site offices, or locations being brought onto a building management network before full infrastructure is in place.
