Overview

UG56 overview

Core Purpose

The UG56 is an indoor LoRaWAN gateway designed to connect large numbers of IoT devices to a centralised network. It collects data from wireless LoRaWAN sensors and forwards it to cloud platforms or network servers for monitoring and control. This allows organisations to manage sensor deployments across buildings, industrial environments, or campus infrastructures.

The device is built to support large IoT networks, capable of handling communication from more than 2000 connected nodes. Its 8-channel LoRaWAN architecture allows many devices to transmit data simultaneously without significant network congestion.

Connectivity and Communication

The gateway supports multiple backhaul options to ensure reliable connectivity. It can connect through Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or optional cellular networks, allowing flexible deployment in environments where wired connectivity may not always be available.

If one connection path becomes unavailable, the gateway can rely on alternative connectivity methods to maintain communication with cloud services or network servers. This helps maintain consistent data flow from field devices to monitoring platforms.

The system integrates with common LoRaWAN network servers such as The Things Stack and ChirpStack, and also includes a built-in network server for simpler deployments. This flexibility makes it suitable for both private and cloud-based IoT networks.

Monitoring and Network Management

The device supports centralised device management through platforms such as DeviceHub and the Milesight IoT Cloud. These tools allow administrators to remotely configure, monitor, and maintain gateway deployments without needing physical access to each unit.

Security is supported through VPN technologies including IPsec and OpenVPN, allowing secure communication between the gateway and remote servers. This is important when IoT systems transmit operational or infrastructure data.

The gateway also provides tools for analysing wireless conditions by detecting and visualizing noise levels in the LoRa environment. This helps installers choose optimal gateway placement and improve network coverage.

Power and Environmental Suitability

The gateway is designed for continuous indoor operation with flexible power options. It supports 802.3af Power over Ethernet (PoE) as well as 5 V power via a Type-C port, allowing deployment in environments with different infrastructure setups.

Its low energy consumption helps maintain efficient long-term operation, with typical consumption around 1.8 W and a maximum of 6.9 W. The device operates within a temperature range of –20 °C to +60 °C, making it suitable for industrial indoor environments or equipment rooms.

The compact metal enclosure measures 110 × 75 × 24 mm and can be installed on a desktop, mounted on a wall, or attached to a DIN rail depending on the deployment environment.

Expansion and Integration

The gateway supports integration with building and industrial systems through protocols such as BACnet/IP and Modbus, allowing data collected from LoRaWAN sensors to be used by existing automation platforms.

Developers can extend functionality through an embedded Python SDK and Node-RED development tools. These options allow organisations to create custom automation workflows, integrate external systems, or process IoT data directly at the gateway level.

Applications

UG56 applications

Smart Buildings

In smart building deployments, the gateway collects data from sensors monitoring temperature, occupancy, lighting, or environmental conditions. With support for large device networks and long-range LoRa communication, it allows building managers to oversee multiple systems through a single centralised gateway.

Industrial Facilities

Industrial sites often deploy sensors to monitor equipment status, environmental conditions, or operational efficiency. The gateway provides a central communication point that gathers sensor data across factory floors and sends it to management systems for analysis and automation.

Smart Campus Infrastructure

Universities, business parks, and large campuses can use the gateway to support distributed IoT systems such as environmental monitoring, parking management, and facility management. Its long communication range allows a small number of gateways to cover large areas.

Smart Metering

Utility providers and facility managers can use LoRaWAN sensors to monitor electricity, water, or gas consumption. The gateway aggregates metre data and forwards it to cloud platforms for billing, analytics, and consumption monitoring.

Smart Parking

Parking systems use wireless sensors to detect vehicle presence and occupancy levels. The gateway collects this data and sends it to parking management platforms, enabling real-time space monitoring and improved traffic flow within parking areas.
