AMR is a system that reads utility meters remotely without sending someone to the site. A small sensor clips onto an existing mechanical meter and picks up its pulse output – each pulse represents a fixed volume or energy unit – then sends the data wirelessly over a long-range network.
The most common IoT approach is attaching a LoRaWAN pulse counter to the meter’s dry-contact output. This turns a passive mechanical meter into a live data source overnight, without replacing it.
- No wiring changes or meter replacement needed
- Pulse counter connects to the meter’s existing output terminal
- Transmits consumption totals and flow rates at configurable intervals
- Triggers alerts for anomalies like sudden flow spikes (possible leak) or zero flow (outage)
- Supports ISO 50001 energy management compliance when used for electricity sub-metering
