DDNS solves a specific problem with cellular internet connections: the public IP address changes every time the router reconnects. Without DDNS, any remote access setup that references that IP address – a VPN config, a SCADA polling server, a remote desktop link – breaks on the next reconnection.
DDNS maps a fixed hostname (e.g. site1.myfleet.net) to the current IP and updates automatically when it changes. Industrial routers typically include support for 10-18 pre-configured DDNS providers plus manual configuration.
- Maintains persistent hostname even when cellular IP changes on reconnect
- Keeps SCADA polling sessions, VPN tunnels, and remote management links working
- Update interval configurable – usually 1-5 minutes to detect IP change quickly
- Works alongside failover so the hostname follows the active SIM connection
